As modern buildings become more space constrained, project teams are coming under growing pressure to deliver faster, more efficient installations. Restricted service zones, late-stage changes and tighter compliance requirements are all reshaping how drainage systems are specified and installed. Chris Goodwin explained: “It was about listening, understanding the pain points, and creating products that would alleviate those issues and allow them to work better on site and at design stage.”
That consultation process brought together technical teams, sales teams, consultants and contractors to identify recurring issues. Among the most significant were a continuing shortage of skilled labour, increasing pressure to reduce service voids in commercial and residential buildings, and the practical headaches caused by pipe misalignment.
“We were hearing the same challenges repeatedly,” said Chris. “There are fewer skilled people on site than there used to be, and consultants are being asked to reduce service areas to maximise usable floor space. We looked at how we could make products easier to install, more compact and more adaptable.”
The result is a suite of new Terrain FUZE fittings designed to simplify drainage installation while improving flexibility for specifiers. One of the additions is the new long radius bend. Historically, creating this type of configuration required installers to fabricate a solution on site using two short bends, a section of cut pipe and multiple couplings. Polypipe’s new single-piece alternative removes that process entirely.
Chris explained: “We developed a long radius bend that is a complete curve. There’s no fabrication there, it’s easier and cheaper to install, and you’ve removed the risk of someone cutting the pipe too long or too short. Any time you redirect the flow of water, you can slow it down and you can also create noise. You want to keep that flow of water as smooth as possible throughout the building.” so it gives a much more compact installation.”
Complementing that are new ring seal adaptor bends that combine multiple functions into a single fitting. Integrating the adaptor and bend into one component reduces the number of parts required, cuts installation time and removes an additional joint, reducing potential leak paths.
“Anywhere you’ve got a joint, you’ve got a potential leak path,” Chris said. “Taking those out improves reliability as well as making installation quicker.”
A further addition is the variable bend, designed to help contractors resolve misalignment issues between floors on multi-storey projects. Adjustable up to 25°, it offers a practical way to correct positioning challenges without extensive on-site fabrication.
For specifiers, the benefits go beyond ease of installation. As drainage routes become harder to accommodate within modern building layouts, having access to more compact and adaptable components creates greater design freedom.
Another innovation is the compact three-way boss branch, developed to tackle increasingly cramped service zones. Traditional four-way branches can be bulky and create crossflow issues, limiting how outlets can be used simultaneously. The new three-way alternative significantly reduces the physical footprint while maintaining performance.
“It’s about half the height of a traditional fitting,” said Chris. “It allows all three outlets to be used at once without crossflow, “It definitely gives them a lot more flexibility within the design,” says Chris. “Service areas are constantly being squeezed, so anything that helps reduce that footprint becomes really valuable.”
The launch also aligns with the wider industry shift towards offsite manufacturing and pre-fabrication, where consistency, quality control and speed are increasingly important.
