With enviable views across an estuary, the stunning waterside setting of Riversmeet Boathouse is a beautiful demonstration of how nature and architecture can work in harmony. To capitalise on these exquisite views and help break down the separation to the outdoors, Reynaers’ SlimLine 68 (SL 68) windows were fitted to deliver expansive views backed by demonstrated performance.
Built on the site of a former boat pavilion, the private residence in the grounds of the Grade II-listed Riversmeet House, in Exeter, contrasts contemporary design with a landscape characterised by coastal views and hillside backdrops. Situated at the point where the River Exe and the River Clyst meet, the
Boathouse’s design amplifies natural light and captures panoramic views. The need to fully capture this view was a key design objective that saw Aspect Windows install Reynaers SL68 systems.
The slimline aluminium systems offered the minimal sightlines needed to capture the feeling of a property embraced by its surroundings, breaking down the visible border between indoors and outdoors. However, with the extremes of tidal zone conditions on the doorstep, protection against powerful shifts in air and water interactions was essential to providing longevity and durable performance.
Finished with pre-anodised aluminium for protection in the marine environment, SL 68 can withstand exposure to the often-harsh riverfront climate while still allowing a clear, open view of the Exe Estuary and adjacent RSPB nature reserve. The high-quality protective coating helps to maintain the long-term integrity of seals and offers superior UV resistance and colour retention. Shielding systems from damaging environmental factors helps to prolong the lifespan of the SL 68 feature windows by maintaining a quality appearance.
STILL WATERS RUN DEEP
SL 68 also supports a high level of comfort, delivering excellent acoustic, thermal and weatherproof performance. With ultra slim sightlines and a subtle aluminium profile, the system delivers climate resistance and excellent insulation properties, as well as a clean and modern architectural finish. SL 68 is rated Class 4 for air tightness, tested at a pressure of 600 Pascals (Pa), which is deemed to correspond with high winds to reduce drafts and energy loss.
The high-performance window is also tested to resist water penetration at a pressure of 1200Pa, crucial for exposed locations that can be subject to wind-driven downpours. It has achieved a Class C5 wind load resistance rating, maintaining structural integrity under extreme wind speeds up to 2000Pa, and meets PAS 24 certification for enhanced home security.
The SL 68 window has been put through a stringent testing regime, ensuring that it is one of the highest-performing and most reliable windows available, and supporting a maximum vent weight of 50kg. With Riversmeet Boathouse requiring large unit sizes, the project benefitted from systems with a maximum vent height of 1,500mm and maximum vent width of 1,300mm, depending on the way they were installed. The strength properties of aluminium were essential to the build, while the lightweight, ultra- slim frame allowed for safe logistics and installation. A total of 12 SL 68 windows deliver the balance of protection, performance and perspective built into the design of Riversmeet Boathouse. The property is finished to an exceptional standard, making use of an early Victorian quay and riverside wall.
The largest of the window units have been manufactured for the master bedroom and hallway, for views that marry the newbuild property to these original outdoor heritage features. Practical benefits of SL 68 for residential settings include a low maintenance, easy to clean style and the use of strong, sustainable materials for long-term performance.
