WALL PANELS: THE SMART SPECIFICATION CHOICE

Jamie Sandilands, Specifications Director of Grant Westfield, reveals why wall panels help lessen specification pressures for hotels.

In today’s hospitality sector, the pressure on specifiers has never been greater. Hotel interiors must deliver standout aesthetics, long-term durability, fast-track installation and measurable sustainability credentials, despite tight timescales and fixed budgets.

For bathroom and interior walls, many architects and designers are now turning to panel systems as a strategic alternative to traditional tiling. Guest bathrooms remain one of the most scrutinised areas of any hotel. They must withstand intensive daily use while reinforcing the brand’s positioning, whether boutique luxury or corporate contemporary.

Grant Westfield’s Multipanel and Naturepanel brands provide a grout-free, fully waterproof wall panel system that combines visual impact with long-term performance. The extensive portfolio spans woodslat and shiplap timber finishes to marble, stone and tile-effect, creating a high-end aesthetic with greater cost certainty and consistency than traditional ceramic tiling.

For specifiers, the technical advantages are clear. Grant Westfield’s patented Hydrolock joint system creates a near-seamless finish with robust water resistance, supporting longevity in high-moisture, high-traffic environments. Large-format panels reduce the number of joints, enhancing both visual continuity and hygiene performance.

Panels can be fitted significantly faster than tiles and, in many refurbishment scenarios, can be installed over existing substrates. With no grout lines and no drying times, contractors can minimise room downtime, which is a crucial consideration.

Equally important is lifecycle maintenance. Grout-free surfaces are easier to clean, reducing housekeeping time and helping maintain appearance standards – a compelling advantage.

DESIGN BEYOND THE BATHROOM

Wall panels applications also extend far beyond the bathroom. Naturepanel can be specified as a full-height feature wall behind beds, creating an architectural headboard effect that elevates perceived room value. In boutique schemes, darker wood tones add depth and intimacy, while lighter finishes support more contemporary palettes.

Reception areas and hotel lobbies can also benefit from the visual rhythm of Wood Slat panelling. Used behind check-in desks or within lounge zones, Naturepanel introduces texture and vertical emphasis, helping define key focal points within open-plan spaces. The availability of extended panel lengths, including 2,700mm formats across selected décors, reduces horizontal joins and maintains a clean finish.

In spa and wellness areas, the combination of natural aesthetic and waterproof performance is valuable. Designers can achieve the sought-after spa look, warm timber tones, calm repetition and tactile depth, even in high-humidity areas. Specifiers can also create a cohesive design across bathrooms, bedrooms, corridors and wellness zones, using complementary panel systems from a single UK manufacturer.

SUPPORTING SUSTAINABILITY

Environmental accountability is now central to hotel development and refurbishment. For projects working towards BREEAM or corporate ESG targets, locally manufactured products with verified chain-of-custody certification can also support sustainability reporting while reducing transportation impacts. Multipanel’s long product warranties further reinforce whole-life value and asset longevity.

As refurbishment cycles shorten and brand standards evolve, hotel operators require interior solutions that balance design ambition with installation efficiency and operational resilience.

Panel systems are no longer viewed as alternatives to tile. They are increasingly the preferred specification choice for projects seeking speed, consistency and lifecycle performance. With large-format waterproof panels reducing downtime, maintenance requirements and snagging risks, specifiers can deliver premium aesthetics while supporting commercial viability.

For specifiers looking to streamline installation, enhance sustainability credentials and elevate guest experience, wall panels represent not just a design decision, but a strategic one.
