Across the UK, the mood for the year ahead is still cautious. The latest official figures show that construction output fell again in November 2025, down 1.3% on the month, with new project work taking the bigger hit. Data published through the Construction Leadership Council also shows the Construction PMI sitting firmly in contraction at 40.1 in December, underlining how fragile any future confidence remains.
Looking ahead, the picture is mixed rather than completely bleak. The Construction Products Association’s winter forecasts point to growth of around 1.7% during 2026, revised down from earlier expectations as inflation, interest rates and delayed decision making continue to weigh on investment intentions. Glenigan’s latest outlook echoes that view, noting that while project starts remain subdued, infrastructure and commercial schemes are expected to provide some stability later in the year as funding unlocks and stalled projects re-enter the planning phase.
Against that backdrop, this issue’s themes feel particularly relevant. Commercial and retail projects are demanding greater certainty around performance, programme and compliance. Offsite construction continues to gain more traction on mainstream projects as businesses look to manage labour shortages and reduce site risks. Meanwhile, window and door systems sit firmly in the spotlight, too, as products where specification detail, safety and long-term performance are under closer scrutiny than ever.
Across all sectors the common thread is the need for evidence. Clients want products and systems that offer demonstrable value, while still providing the quality and compliance that their projects demand. As the year unfolds, that focus on clarity and credibility may prove just as important as the market’s ongoing cost pressures.
